For a lot of leagues, X4Golf is the first step off the spreadsheet. For $55 a year it handles the schedule, handicaps and standings, and it does that job. What it doesn’t do is take much work off the commissioner. Scores still get entered on a desktop, fixes mean re-scoring whole matches, and every login is typed in by hand.

LeaderBoard Caddie is the next step. It’s built so the commissioner can run the league from a phone and spend Thursday night playing golf instead of doing data entry.

I built LeaderBoard Caddie, so I’m not neutral. To keep this fair, I opened a new X4Golf account in October 2026 and ran a real league from scratch: Big Jim’s Thursday Night League, eight players, nine holes, eight Thursdays. I added a course, built the schedule, scored a round, fixed a score afterward and tried live scoring on my phone. Everything below comes from that test or from X4Golf’s own site and help text.

1. One person can score the whole group

Every league has a player or two who doesn’t want to deal with a phone on the course.

On X4Golf, the phone scoring screen holds one player. A member login can enter scores for anyone, so one person can cover the group, but they score each card separately and flip between players hole by hole. The screen also doesn’t show your opponent or where the match stands.

On LeaderBoard Caddie, one person enters the whole group on one screen, the way one person used to keep the paper card. The player who hates technology never has to touch it.

2. A leaderboard that keeps up on its own

X4Golf’s live leaderboard shows gross, net and holes played, and it has a Refresh button you tap to see new scores. On my phone the column headers overlapped.

LeaderBoard Caddie’s live leaderboard updates every 30 seconds without anyone tapping anything, so the guys in the clubhouse can watch the last groups come in.

3. Fix a score in seconds, from your phone

Every commissioner fixes scores. Someone wrote a 5 that was a 6, or a card got entered under the wrong player.

On X4Golf, the fix runs through a desktop menu: Tools, Edit Round Data, pick the round, pick the match, Re-Score, then resubmit the whole match. X4Golf’s help text warns that correcting points by hand after a score change “gets complicated.” In fairness, the re-score works. When I changed a score, the skins recalculated correctly.

On LeaderBoard Caddie, you open the scorecard on your phone and change the hole. Skins, payouts and standings recalculate on their own. That works even after the event is finalized, and every change is saved in an audit log, so nobody wonders who changed what.

4. Skins payouts done for you

X4Golf lists the gross and net skins winners by hole on the round report, and it has sign-up pages to track who’s in each pot. I didn’t find dollar amounts or carryovers. The commissioner still divides the pot.

LeaderBoard Caddie handles gross or net skins with optional carryover and calculates the payouts, so nobody is splitting the money on a calculator in the parking lot.

5. Reach players by text, without managing logins

X4Golf sends email, and only to players with an email address on file. A phone number field exists on the player record, but I didn’t find anything that uses it. For logins, the commissioner creates every member account by hand from one settings screen, typing a username and password for each. A login isn’t tied to a player, so anyone with one can enter scores for anyone.

LeaderBoard Caddie texts the whole league or a single group, which is how a rainout or tee-time change reaches people who are already driving to the course. Each player gets their own login by email and signs in with a link or a password they set. The commissioner never creates or hands out passwords.

6. Setup in minutes

A new X4Golf league starts on a blank home page. The help text says to finish the Settings first, which means nine tabs of options before you’ve added a player. Then the course goes in by hand, including every tee you set up in Settings. Players are typed in 10 rows at a time. In an individual league, every player also has to be set up as a one-person team, one per submit, before the schedule will build. The admin sidebar has about 80 pages.

LeaderBoard Caddie starts with a guided setup. Pick a day, a course and a number of rounds, add your players by hand or from a spreadsheet, and the schedule and pairings are built. Most leagues are done in about five minutes.

7. Standings that work from round one

After I scored my first round on X4Golf, all eight players had 0.0 points and were tied for first. All 33 point fields on the Points tab default to zero, and nothing in setup tells you to fill them in. When I did set points, the standings still didn’t change. Settings changes don’t reach rounds already played, so I had to re-score each match by hand.

LeaderBoard Caddie’s setup checklist has you pick a points template from ready-made presets before the season starts, so the standings count from the first round.

Where X4Golf still makes sense

X4Golf isn’t a bad product. It’s cheap, and it does its job.

  • Price. $55 a year with unlimited players, subs, courses and rounds.
  • Settings. Nine tabs, about a dozen handicap methods, up to six tees per course, detailed blind and bye rules, and 33 point fields. If your league has an unusual rule, there’s probably a box for it.
  • Quota scoring and flights. Both are built in. LeaderBoard Caddie doesn’t have either yet. They’re on the fall 2026 feature list.

If you’re coming off a spreadsheet, the commissioner likes working at a desk, and you need quota or flights today, X4Golf is a reasonable choice. If you’d rather hand the scoring to the players and run the league from your phone, LeaderBoard Caddie is the next step.

Frequently asked questions

How much does X4Golf cost?

$55 a year for one league, with unlimited players, subs, courses and rounds. The first 4 weeks are free.

Does X4Golf have an app?

No. It runs in a web browser on a phone or computer, so players don’t download anything. LeaderBoard Caddie works the same way.

Does X4Golf have live scoring?

Yes. The commissioner turns it on in Settings and creates member logins, and players score from a phone browser.

Can one person keep score for the group on X4Golf?

Partly. Any member login can enter scores for any player, but the phone screen shows one player at a time. On LeaderBoard Caddie, one person enters the whole group on one screen.

Can I switch from X4Golf to LeaderBoard Caddie mid-season?

Yes. Import your roster with current handicaps, set the remaining rounds, and play the next week.
